Mary I. Spilman came to Pikeville College in 1918, and worked in many capacities at the institution until her death in 1971. Originally from Illinois, Mary went to college with Alice Record, James Record’s daughter, a long-time teacher and administrator of the college in her own right. Alice and President Record encouraged Mary to come and teach at Pikeville, and in the fall of 1918, she and her mother came to Pikeville, where both stayed for the rest of their lives.

Initially coming to teach math, by the end of her career, Mary had taught classes in mathematics, Bible, foreign languages, and what she is best known for, biology. She taught classes for the Teachers Training Institute and led many school activities for the students, such as the yearbook staff. She sang and played piano, and helped direct musical and theatrical events.

She taught classes until 1959, when she became the director of Alumni Affairs. One of our dorms, Spilman Apartments, is named in her honor. She died August 17, 1971, having spent 53 of her 84 years working at Pikeville. Throughout her years with the college, Mary made many scrapbooks related to student life.

During World War II, Mary Spilman sent material out to servicemen and women, and received images and postcards in return. Mary collected the items into three scrapbooks. Pikeville College had students placed all over the world during the war, and the material in the scrapbooks reflect where each was stationed.
